The Cadillac Optiq and Vistiq electric SUVs are arriving soon in Australia with smaller batteries than their US-market counterparts, and the company has cited European regulations as the reason.
The Optiq, for which local deliveries will commence in the third quarter (July to September) of 2026, will have a 75kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery instead of an 85kWh NMC pack as in the US.
The Vistiq, due here in the fourth quarter (October to December), also steps down from a 102kWh pack to a 91kWh unit, despite being closely related to the Lyriq which is sold globally with a 102kWh pack.

“ECE Regulation 100.03 was recently introduced and precluded the use of the US-spec batteries,” John Cockburn, the chief engineer for the Cadillac Optiq, explained to CarExpert.
“Thus, we have a battery for ECE markets with revised topologies, inherent cell designs that comply [with] these new ECE regulations.”
Jeff MacDonald, the chief engineer for the Vistiq and Lyriq, also confirmed the three-row SUV has a new ECE-compliant battery pack.
The stricter UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) standard applies to vehicles approved for sale in Europe after September 1, 2025. Vehicles that received approval prior to this date are still able to be sold in Europe with batteries that meet earlier standards.
This explains why the Lyriq is still exported with its larger 102kWh pack, though it’s unclear for how much longer it will have this in export markets.
The Australian-market Optiq has 425km of WLTP range, the Vistiq has 461km, and the Lyriq is the longest-range Cadillac here with 530km of range.
WLTP figures aren’t available for the US-market Optiq and Vistiq with their larger battery packs, so it’s unclear how much range suffers as a result of the move to these different packs.
The difference in DC fast-charge rates is notable, however. The global Optiq can only be charged at up to 110kW, instead of 150kW as with the US-market model, while the Vistiq’s DC charge rate drops from 190kW to 130kW.
When asked whether there are plans to improve range and charging capabilities in Cadillac EVs, Mr Cockburn declined to outline any future product plans.
“Our engineers are constantly evaluating and working to meaningfully improve our products and experiences for our customers,” he said.
Thanks to major tariffs, the US market remains largely closed off to Chinese automakers, which have been investing heavily in electrification and have shaken up the global EV market.
In markets like Europe and Australia, there are many more Chinese models on sale than in the US. Zeekr, for example, offers its 7X mid-size electric SUV here – a rival for the Cadillac Optiq – with a DC charge rate of between 420kW and 450kW depending on the variant, and between 480km and 615km of range. Its 22kW AC charge rate is matched by the local Cadillac lineup, however.
While Cadillac sells the Vistiq in China, it lists a 95.7kWh battery as being standard in that market, as with the Lyriq-V that has just been launched there. It doesn’t specify whether this is a net or gross capacity and doesn’t list a DC charge rate figure for either vehicle, though it says both can be fast-charged from 20 to 80 per cent in half an hour.
The smaller batteries aren’t the only change Cadillac makes for export markets.
Right-hand drive examples of the Optiq and Vistiq go without a head-up display (HUD), despite this feature being offered in left-hand drive vehicles – and despite parent company GM, along with Nissan, having pioneered automotive HUDs all the way back in 1988.
“HUD implementation on RHD models was not pursued because the required hardware and supporting electronics could not be packaged within the RHD instrument panel architecture without substantial redesign,” explained Mr MacDonald.
“These hardware‑driven packaging limitations, along with the resulting mechanical, optical, and validation complexity, exceeded the intended scope for the variant.”
