WhenBYDlaunched theFangchengbaobrand in 2023, it was envisioned as an off-road marque with some track-focused models thrown into the mix.
So far Fangchengbao showrooms in China have been populated with body-on-frame SUVs and unibody SUVs. While the brand’s first sporty car isn’t far away, it’s not an out-and-out sports car as promised by earlier concepts.
As part of the certification process in China, Fangchengbao has submitted images and data to gain a sales licence for the Formula S liftback and wagon, whichCarNewsChinahas found and published.
These models were previewed in concept form at the Beijing motor show earlier this year, along with the Formula X supercar concept.

Apart from the Fangchangbao logo there’s little stylistically that ties the Formula S to its chunkier, more off-road focussed siblings.
Measuring 5060mm long, 1967mm wide, 1483mm tall, and riding on a 2960mm wheelbase, the Formula S liftback is quite a substantial vehicle. Interestingly, the more practical Formula S GT wagon is 35mm shorter from head to tail.
Three drivetrains will be offered on the Formula S, with the base liftback featuring a 245kW motor driving the rear wheels. The drivetrain one rung up is available in both the liftback and wagon, and has a 300kW motor on the rear axle.

At the top of the pile for both body styles is a two-motor all-wheel drive 490kW setup with a 190kW motor up front, and a 300kW motor at the rear.
All variants have a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade battery, and will have support for BYD’s Flash Charging system.
While no images of the interior of the Formula S were filed with authorities, we can see the car comes with a LiDAR pod on the roof, suggesting the availability of BYD’s DiPlot advanced driver assistance system.
The Formula S rides on 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels, and there’s a wide selection of rim designs and aero cover colours for buyers to choose from. Kerb weight ranges from 1999kg for the base liftback to 2280kg for the top-of-range wagon.

The Fangchengbao Formula S will go on sale in China during the third quarter of 2026.
It’s unclear if the company has plans to export the Formula S, but if it does make it overseas the car will likely wear Denza badges. Currently the Denza B5 and B8 available in Australian showrooms are rebadges of the Fangchengbao 5 and 8, respectively.
They’ll be joined later this year in Denza’s Australian showrooms by the Z9 GT, an electric wagon that’s even larger than the Formula S.
