Cupra Australia has confirmed it won’t reintroduce the Born electric hatchback, at least for the foreseeable future.
In a statement to CarExpert, the head of product for the Spanish brand’s local division, Jeff Shafer, said there are “no plans” to bring the now-discontinued Born back to Australia anytime soon, following a facelift for 2026.
He said the company’s electric vehicle (EV) focus is instead now firmly on the larger Tavascan electric SUV, and the smaller Raval electric hatch revealed earlier this year.
“While the Born isn’t currently available in Australia, it’s not a vehicle we’ve forgotten about. Right now, our EV focus is on Tavascan and the upcoming Raval, and ensuring each model has a clear role within the Cupra range,” Mr Shafer said.
“We’ll continue discussions with our global team, and while there are no plans to reintroduce Born at this stage, we’d never say never.”
The Cupra Born first arrived in Australia in 2023 after debuting in 2021, and was the Spanish brand’s first EV globally. It shares its rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Group MEB architecture with the VW ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5, as well as the larger Cupra Tavascan, and the Skoda Elroq and Enyaq.
It was actually the first of the Volkswagen Group’s dedicated EVs to arrive in Australia, following a number of delays and strategic changes for brands including Volkswagen and Skoda. It remains the only non-SUV model based on the dedicated-electric MEB platform to make it Down Under.
After pre-orders opened in December 2022, Cupra sold 1654 examples of the Born until the end of May 2025, with the single-variant launch range initially meant to be replaced by the 240kW Born VZ hot hatch.
Cupra Australia never ended up releasing the performance variant, but did import one evaluation vehicle which was subsequently sold to a keen buyer for an advertised price over $70,000.
While the original Born offered multiple battery and e-motor output options in overseas markets like Europe, Australia only received the high-output 170kW version with the long-range 77kWh battery for the MY23 and MY24 build years – again with the exception of that sole VZ example.
In March this year, Cupra unveiled the facelifted Born with a more aggressive exterior, and an upgraded interior with a more luxurious feel and some old-school switchgear.
Beyond the design and material upgrades, the refreshed Born debuted a new Android-based operating system for its in-car displays (including a larger 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster), as well as enhanced driver-assistance systems.
With the larger 79kWh battery, the Born claims to offer over 600km of WLTP-certified driving range between charges, while the high-performance VZ claims a 5.6-second dash from 0-100km/h.
After initially being earmarked for potential reintroduction to Australia, it appears Cupra Australia just can’t make the business case work for its EV pioneer.
Instead, Mr Shafer has effectively confirmed the smaller Raval, revealed earlier this year as the brand’s new affordable EV, will serve as the new entry point for Cupra Australia’s electrified portfolio.
Measuring 4046mm long, 1784mm wide and 1518mm tall on a 2600mm wheelbase, the Raval has roughly the same footprint as the existingVolkswagen Polo– which makes sense given it’s a twin under the skin to the new all-electric VW ID. Polo – but it packs a massive 441 litres of boot space.
In its home market of Spain, the Raval will be offered with four electric motor outputs (85kW, 99kW, 155kW and 166kW), two battery capacities (37kWh and 52kWh), and a driving range of up to 450km on the WLTP cycle.
In Spain, the Raval is positioned below the cheapestLeon Hatch, which in Australia kicks off from $46,990 before on-road costs. That could point to a starting price around the $40,000 mark when the Raval eventually makes it to Australia, likely in 2027.
For reference, the Born was originally launched at $59,990 before on-roads when it landed here in 2023, and in its runout phase could be had for around $47,000 drive-away fully optioned.
Despite record deliveries of EVs in Australia during the first half of 2026, amid high fuel prices and shortages due to conflict in the Middle East, sales of electric passenger cars (non-SUVs) aren’t growing as rapidly as their high-riding counterparts.
The pint-size BYD Atto 1 is Australia’s best-selling electric passenger vehicle in 2026 as of June 30, returning 3254 registrations – placing it just ahead of the once-top-selling Tesla Model 3 sedan (3192). For context, the larger and more expensive Tesla Model Y mid-size electric SUV, by far and away Australia’s favourite EV, found 20,396 new homes during the same period.
A total of 103,843 EVs were delivered in the first half of 2026 per data supplied by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) – an 119.8 per cent increase on the same period in 2025, more than doubling their market share.
Cupra’s EV volume so far this year is only a small fraction of that record figure, with 287 Tavascans and one Born registered in the first six months of 2026.
