Australia's best-selling EVs halfway through 2026

Electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for roughly one in six new vehicles delivered to Australians during the first half of 2026, or 16.4 per cent, more than doubling their market share from the same period last year.

A total of 103,843 EVs were delivered in the first half of 2026 per data supplied by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC).

This was an 119.8 per cent increase on the same period last year, while market share has grown dramatically too. EVs accounted for 7.6 per cent of the total market in the first half of 2025.

Brands

BYD has displaced Tesla as Australia’s best-selling EV brand, despite the latter posting a sales increase of 66.7 per cent compared with the first half of 2025.

The Chinese giant, however, increased its EV sales by 241.2 per cent, recording 29,192 deliveries in the first half of 2026 against 23,588 Teslas.

BYD therefore had 28.1 per cent of the total EV market, with Tesla holding 22.3 per cent.

While Kia was the third-best selling EV brand in 2025, in the first half of this year it was narrowly pipped by Geely with 6756 deliveries against 6204 for the Korean brand.

Jaecoo is off to a strong start, with its debut (and thus far only) EV powering it to fifth place among EV brands. The Chery-owned brand managed to beat MG, which fell to seventh despite a 58.1 per cent uplift in its EV sales compared with the first half of 2025.

Zeekr sat in sixth place, fuelled almost entirely by the extremely popular 7X mid-size SUV, while the top 10 was rounded out by the closely clustered Volkswagen, Hyundai and BMW brands.

Over 40 auto brands now sell EVs in Australia, with Tesla and Polestar reporting their sales figures to the EVC and almost every other brand to the FCAI.

There are a couple of exceptions, however. GAC, Cadillac and Smart don’t yet report their sales to either the FCAI or the EVC.

Xpeng vehicles finally made their debut in June’s VFACTS report now that a factory distributor is handling the brand here.

Models

Tesla may no longer be the top-selling EV brand here, but it still has the top-selling EV.

The Model Y notched up 20,396 deliveries, placing it well ahead of another mid-size electric SUV, the second-placed BYD Sealion 7 with 12,516 units.

There was another big drop to the third-place finisher, the Geely EX5, with 6756 deliveries.

The best-selling hatchback was the BYD Atto 1 (3254 deliveries, seventh place overall), the best-selling sedan the Tesla Model 3 (3192, eighth place), and the best-selling people mover the Volkswagen ID. Buzz (554, 27th place),

While many EV nameplates are exclusively offered with electric power, some are based on internal combustion engine-powered (ICE) vehicles.

Below is a breakdown as to what percentage of a nameplate’s total sales consisted of EV variants, with EV-only models not included.

Note that some models only recently received non-EV variants (such as the Jaecoo J5) while others have had their ICE variants discontinued (eg: Porsche Macan, Lexus UX).
