2026 Volkswagen Multivan Edition review: Quick drive

It’s been more than 40 years since the Volkswagen Multivan nameplate first arrived on the scene, following the related Caravelle released in the late 1970s.

But while the Caravelle has served as more of a family minibus, the Multivan was designed to add greater comfort and more modularity – opening up use cases for camping and those needing an office on wheels.

The Caravelle people mover – and the Transporter delivery van on which it’s based – now share their underpinnings with the Ford Transit Custom, while the current-generation T7 Multivan uses the same MQB Evo architecture that the Golf and Tiguan are built on.

Only arriving in Australia in 2025, but released overseas in 2021, the T7 Multivan is now halfway through its lifecycle – with the facelifted version already revealed in Europe. Volkswagen Australia has confirmed the updates will arrive here in the second quarter of 2027, when a plug-in hybrid variant with all-wheel drive will join the lineup.

In the meantime, there’s this: the 2026 Volkswagen Multivan Edition.

It’s the third time VW has done an Edition – with the first being released 25 years ago – adding some extra style and value for those who want to get into a new Multivan but aren’t prepared to wait for the refreshed version.

Limited to 300 vehicles, the Multivan Edition is available with a choice of white or dark flat grey, coupled with a black roof, black exterior pack, special decals, and 18-inch alloy wheels in black. It also gets IQ.Light LED matrix headlights with dynamic cornering and smoked LED tail-lights, along with some minor changes to its interior and technology.

Judging by the looks we received on the street, the general consensus is this thing looks pretty cool – something that hasn’t often been said about people movers.

But with the niche people mover segment seeing increased competition from Chinese automakers, is the Multivan still a solid player in this space?

How much does the Volkswagen Multivan cost?

In the lineup, the Multivan Edition sits above the SWB seven-seater Multivan Life on which it’s based, and below both the LWB seven-seater and eight-seater Life variants.

However, despite its base price being slightly lower than that of the LWB seven-seater Life, they both share the same drive-away price of $82,990.

The best-selling people mover in Australia is far and away the Kia Carnival, which is priced from $50,570 before on-road costs – but rises to $85,000 plus on-roads for the Carnival GT-Line.

Arguably, the Multivan’s other threat comes from within the Volkswagen stable. The electric ID. Buzz has received a lot of praise since its launch, and is priced from $79,990 drive-away for the five-seater version, and $84,990 drive-away for the seven-seater at the time of writing.

What is the Volkswagen Multivan like on the inside?

Given some of the spaceships we’ve seen launch in recent times, it’s a bit of a relief to get into something as… straightforward, let’s say, as the Multivan.

Its simplicity is part of its charm, and it presents with a bit of class, but also isn’t trying too hard to be something it’s not. The dashboard itself is a combination of good-quality plastics that are built well, and matched with a leather-wrapped steering wheel lifted from the Golf. For those with a Volkswagen in their garage already, the Multivan will feel comfortable and familiar.

The Edition gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver, which is easy to read, and a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard – small by today’s standards, but still perfectly adequate.

Native satellite navigation (does anyone still use that?) and 360-degree parking cameras are also standard for this grade.

Directly underneath the infotainment screen are the haptic controls for the climate system, which aren’t especially helpful for making minor changes on the run, because you still need to check where you’re pressing exactly. But also, it means you can’t brace your hand to make selections on the screen, so you end up hitting random climate buttons.

After pulling over and figuring out that I’d accidentally turned off the infotainment system, the wireless Apple CarPlay performed well, while the native menus and controls were easy to find and navigate. Volkswagen also deserves points for giving us a steering wheel with real shortcut buttons and an intuitive layout. The indicator, wiper, and cruise control stalks are also beautifully crisp and instinctive.

The Edition also gets two-tone ArtVelour seats – which is something between traditional velour and suede – in charcoal grey and sand, with the driver and front passenger getting heated seats. While the ArtVelour upholstery is lovely, I would be concerned about yoghurt stains if your kids are still in primary school.

Ergonomics are really great. The Multivan is like an upright Golf, with plenty of reach adjustment for the steering wheel and comfortable seats with lumbar adjustment for us oldies. The drive selector is a little nubbin that sticks out from the dash, with the electric parking brake switch placed inconveniently further down on the panel. Not the end of the world, but it would make more sense if they were next to each other.

In the configuration we tested, the job of the centre console was being played by the moveable multi-function table, which has cupholders and tables that swing up like wings.

Second-row passengers get dual power sliding doors, individual seats with armrests, and heaps of legroom. The back of the front seats have pockets designed to hold phones and tablets – similar to what you’d get on a Qantas flight. There are also flip-up trays, though these are pretty flimsy and not immediately intuitive to use, and I suspect an impatient teenager will snap the cheap plastic in about five minutes.

Thanks to the individual second-row seats, there’s an aisle to access the third-row bench seat, provided you haven’t fitted the multi-function table there.

One of the selling points of the Multivan is the fact that it has a flat floor, with the seats and multi-function table secured on a rail system. This means owners can choose how many seats they need, whether they want to maximise legroom or luggage space, and generally play around with cabin configurations to suit their needs.

Most people won’t require this kind of modularity, but it’s not hard to imagine scenarios in which families need to carry four people while carting around a stack of surfboards, a couple of bicycles, a double bass, or something equally big and awkward.

With the three rows of seats in place, Volkswagen says there’s 469 litres of storage, and up to 461mm of load length. Remove the third row and your cargo space jumps to 1844L, with up to 1316mm of length, while a two-seater Multivan gives you 3672L of space with 2425mm of length.

What’s under the bonnet?

The Multivan is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

While unavailable in this version, Volkswagen has said the Multivan eHybrid will be arriving in 2027 with the updated model. The company has yet to announce specifications, but overseas, the outgoing plug-in hybrid powertrain provides up to 94km of driving range, with the benefit of all-wheel drive.

How does the Volkswagen Multivan drive?

On the road is where the Multivan really stands out from most of its competition.

I suspect the Multivan is a victim of its own identity, because it can be hard to pigeonhole. Typically, people movers are either large, inflated station wagons, like the Kia Carnival and Chrysler Voyager (if you’re old enough to remember that one), or they are light commercial vans with some seats and carpet thrown in.

The Multivan is a bit strange, because it kind of looks like it’s based on a commercial vehicle, but it drives like a bigger Volkswagen Golf.

Its 110kW/360Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel is nice and smooth, and delivers enough power to keep you ahead of traffic – though it isn’t an all-out powerhouse. The engine is helped by the seven-speed dual-clutch auto, which is crisp and responsive, and has enough ratios to keep the four-cylinder in its powerband.

There is a bit of a delay if you want to take off from the lights in a hurry, but once that turbocharger is spinning, there’s a good flow of torque available from the powerplant.

Should the moment take you, you can also slap the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel and swap cogs yourself – though it’s better to keep the engine in the middle third of its rev range, as performance tapers off towards redline.

Volkswagen claims 6.4L/100km, which is pretty good for a non-hybrid fridge on wheels. We weren’t able to verify this due to our limited time with the vehicle, but even if it’s out by 20 per cent, it’s still a pretty efficient way to get around.

Most of our time was spent on freeways, with some winding mountain roads in the middle, and busy city driving bookending our time with the VW.

One of its strengths is the way it drives. The Multivan actually handles really well, never feeling like it’s about to fall over itself in corners, even when we were testing in the Royal Nasho beyond anything it would typically experience in the hands of most families.

You can absolutely feel the Golf DNA coursing through its lines, and it is certainly more responsive than most large SUVs on the market that can carry this many passengers. It really feels a lot smaller than it is.

However, the steering was a little too numb for our liking, with next to no feedback from the front tyres during normal driving. There’s no problem placing the car on winding roads, but a bit more feel would be preferred.

More than that, though, we wish more had been done to improve its suspension damping, as it comes across as unsophisticated and a little slapdash. And while the front-row occupants are comfortable enough, there’s quite a bit of harshness for anyone travelling in the back, particularly over larger bumps. It’s nowhere near the worst we’ve experienced, but considering its price – and how good the Kia Carnival is – this is definitely an area where the Multivan could do better.

There was the occasional scuttle shake, which seemed to be a combination of the suspension being overwhelmed and the body needing a touch more rigidity. But, again, my overall impression was of being impressed with how it drove, and none of these things would be a dealbreaker.

Noise insulation is a notch or two above the minimum of what you’d want, with the ability to have a conversation with the person next to you – though you might struggle to hear those further back. Then again, that might be a positive.

The car’s safety systems are well dialled in. Rather than acting like a short-tempered driving instructor, it provides a gentle and guiding hand to help you get down the road safely, which is exactly how it should be.

Thanks to good visibility and a decent turning circle, the Multivan didn’t feel too big or intimidating to drive in tight city streets, but it was out on the open road where the car felt most comfortable. Adaptive cruise on, tunes in the background, seat heater cranking – it’s the type of car that encourages you to plan an interstate road trip with your family or friends.

Is the Volkswagen Multivan safe?

The Volkswagen Multivan has been awarded a five-star safety rating by ANCAP, with the vehicle tested by its sister organisation, Euro NCAP, in 2022.

The Multivan scored particularly well with adult and child occupant protection, though didn’t score as strongly for vulnerable road users – meaning pedestrians and cyclists.

How much does the Volkswagen Multivan cost to run?

The Multivan Edition is backed by Volkswagen’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, with 12 months of roadside assistance.

Service intervals are 12 months or 15,000km, and Assured Service Pricing is quoted for up to five years.

However, Volkswagen also offers three- and five-year Care Plans – which essentially pre-pays for servicing at a discounted rate – with the latter costing $3067.

CarExpert’s Take on the Volkswagen Multivan Edition

The Volkswagen Multivan is a little unloved by Australian buyers (based on recent sales figures), but after spending some time with the people mover, that seems unjustified.

In fact, the Multivan feels like it’s a really good balance for Aussie families that need space and the options that come with its modularity.

It’s sophisticated, drives well, and has more than a touch of German class about it. But it’s not over-the-top or too showy, as many vehicles in this space appear to be. And though the Kia Carnival is the most popular people mover on sale, there’s an argument that the VW badge carries a little more cachet.

While it’s a matter of personal preference, we also think the Edition looks fantastic in the dark flat grey, matched with the black wheels and exterior trims – and based on the heads we turned, the public seems to agree.

Yet it was on the road that it impressed us most, taking the character of the widely praised Golf and injecting that into a practical shape. It’s certainly much better than many of the people movers out there that are based on commercial vans.

The Multivan is also no-nonsense and comfortable. Everything is practical and built to a high standard, and doesn’t follow the current trend of offering superfluous features and technology.

For families not ready to make the jump to the electric ID. Buzz, but want something arguably cooler than a Kia people mover – and aren’t prepared to wait for the updated model next year – the Volkswagen Multivan Edition is certainly worth looking at.
