The Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Grand Cherokee 4xe, and Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrids have all officially been axed in the US.
A Stellantis spokesperson told The Drive, “With customer demand shifting, Stellantis will phase out plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) programs in North America beginning with the 2026 model year.”
That’s despite the Wrangler 4xe traditionally being the best-selling PHEV in the US, with the Grand Cherokee 4xe not far off.
The company said it “continually evaluates its product strategy to meet evolving customer needs and regulatory requirements”.
US President Donald Trump is a firm believer that climate change is a “hoax”, and has set the penalty of failing the country’s CAFE fuel economy target to zero dollars. In addition to this, his administration ended the federal tax rebate of up to US$7500 (A$11,200) for electric vehicles (EVs) at the end of September 2025.

Despite axing the Wrangler, Grand Cherokee and Pacifica plug-in hybrids, the Stellantis spokesperson said the automaker will “focus on more competitive electrified solutions, including hybrid and range‑extended vehicles where they best meet customer needs”.
In September 2025, Ram announced it was cancelling its long-delayed 1500 EV, opting instead to fast-track the extended-range EV variant.
The axing of the three plug-in hybrids follows on from an engine fire recall for the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe in November 2025.
According to The Drive, a fix for the problem isn’t due until the second quarter of 2026, and a stop sale order for all Wrangler and Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid in dealer inventory was put in place until a resolution for the issue is available to dealers. The stop sale then expanded to a prolonged hiatus, and now the confirmed market withdrawl.
In Australia the Wrangler is currently only available with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The Grand Cherokee, including the 4xe variant, remains listed on the company’s local website, even though the entire Grand Cherokee range was axed Down Under in March 2025.
The Chrysler Pacifica people mover has never been sold in Australia as it isn’t built in right-hand drive, unlike its Voyager forebears.
Jeep currently sells just one plug-in hybrid in Australia, part of the second-generation Compass family.
In Europe, the Compass has been replaced by a new generation, scheduled to arrive Down Under in late 2026, which will offer mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.
