Genesis' new flagship SUV is getting Rolls-Royce-style doors

Genesis will crown its SUV lineup with a new flagship three-row model, expected to be called the GV90, and it’ll look a lot like the concept car that previewed it… right down to its novel doors.

In 2024, Genesis previewed its flagship SUV with the Neolun concept, featuring no B-pillar and a pair of rear-hinged rear coach doors.

While coach doors are common on concept cars, they typically disappear by the time a vehicle reaches production, but at the time Genesis said its door configuration had “reached a level where its application to production vehicles is now feasible”.

Well, as these spy photographs show, Genesis has figured out how to engineer a production SUV without a B-pillar and with a pair of rear-hinged coach doors without negatively impacting structural rigidity or refinement.

Even the Rolls-Royce Cullinan still has a B-pillar, despite offering coach doors.

The Neolun concept also had a four-seat configuration with swivelling front seats, plus power-deployable side steps. It’s unclear if these features will appear on the production vehicle.

The production car is set to closely resemble the concept externally, with a boxy yet rounded body and a linear roof line, likely to maximise headroom for all occupants. Split-level front, side and rear lighting elements, a Genesis signature design element, are visible.

This spied prototype also features a blue interior, something Genesis offers across many of its vehicles. The tufted inserts on the doors are also reminiscent of the Neolon concept.

The production GV90 is set to offer electric power, even though Genesis has walked away from its previously stated goal of going electric-only by 2030.

It’s unclear if the GV90 – expected to use the upcoming eM platform with an 800-volt electrical architecture – will offer any other powertrain types.

Genesis is rolling out its first hybrid and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) models over the next few years.

The Korean luxury brand confirmed this year it’s also working on a new platform, launching in 2028, which will support hybrids, EVs and EREVs.

The GV90 isn’t the only new Genesis SUV in the pipeline.

Genesis also plans to put into production the X Gran Equator off-roader concept which it revealed earlier this year.
