Chinese newcomers score top safety marks

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has released its latest round of safety ratings right before Christmas, with the GWM Haval H7, MG 7 and MG ZS all receiving five-star ratings.

MG’s new MG 7 liftback is just arriving in market, with ANCAP reporting the new mid-sizer “[performed] well in crash testing” and offers “a comprehensive range of standard active safety technologies”.

The MG ZS, meanwhile, has seen its rating updated from four to five stars for vehicles built from December 4, 2025.

MG recently confirmed the addition of a front-centre airbag across the range from said build date, upping the Chinese crossover’s adult occupant score from 75 per cent to 81 per cent, which also adds a fifth star to the safety rating.

“ANCAP encourages safety improvements from all manufacturers as part of their ongoing design updates, and MG should be commended for proactively making improvements to the ZS,” said ANCAP CEO, Carla Hoorweg.

Finally, the GWM Haval H7 demonstrated “sound performance across ANCAP’s crash protection and crash avoidance assessments”, leading to another five-star rating for the Chinese brand.

However, “an anomaly was observed involving the dislodgement of the driver’s head restraint from the seat back” during the full-width frontal crash test, which has resulted in a voluntary safety recall for vehicles already sold.

“Ensuring the integrity and performance of fundamental restraint systems is central to ANCAP’s mission. Where our testing reveals unexpected results we work with the vehicle manufacturer to ensure the best safety outcomes for existing and future owners,” Ms Hoorweg said.

ANCAP’s five-star rating only applies to GWM Haval H7 models built from October 15, 2025, with vehicles built prior to this date (VINs LGWEFUA60RF800006 to LGWEFUA6XSF802190) only applicable for this rating once the recall action has been completed.
