The boss of one of the world’s top car companies has confirmed it will no longer aim to switch to an electric-only vehicle lineup in Europe by 2030.
Speaking at the Munich motor show this week, Jean-Philippe Imparato, COO of Stellantis – the parent company of 14 brands, including Alfa Romeo, Jeep and Peugeot – says a plan to have a fully electric model range by the end of the decade has been scrapped, per a report from Reuters.
In 2022, under previous CEO Carlos Tavares, the car giant put forward a strategic target which would have seen petrol and diesel engines scrapped across its European portfolio by 2030 – while also aiming for 50 per cent of sales in North America to be made up of electric vehicles (EVs).
However, Stellantis isn’t the first carmaker to change tack.

For example, in September 2024 Volvo discarded plans to only sell EVs by 2030. The Swedish brand had previously said it would switch to an entirely electric lineup in the Australian market by 2026.
Other companies such as Mercedes-Benz and General Motors have also revised their targets and timeframes.
Earlier this year, Dodge – part of the Stellantis family – announced it was dropping the entry-level electric Charger R/T due to poor demand, despite being in production for less than two years.
As reported by CarExpert in June 2025, American pickup specialist Ram – also part of Stellantis – confirmed it was reviving the ‘Hemi’ V8 engine for the 1500, after dropping the powerplant for a twin-turbo six-cylinder unit at the end of 2024.
“Everyone makes mistakes, but how you handle them defines you. Ram screwed up when we dropped the Hemi – we own it and we fixed it,” Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis said at the time.
“We’re not just bringing back a legendary V8 engine, we’re igniting an assertive product plan and expanding the freedom of choice in powertrain for our customers.”
This announcement came after Ram once again delayed its first electric pickup truck, the 1500 REV, as well as the Ramcharger extended-range electric vehicle (EREV).
Earlier this year, fellow Stellantis brand Alfa Romeo cancelled its plans to go EV-only by 2027, citing the need for combustion-powered vehicles for the US market.
