The upcoming ‘baby’ Land Rover Defender – expected to wear the Defender Sport badge – will arrive next year as the smallest model in the lineup and the first fully electric Defender, yet the brand’s global boss promises it will remain true to the nameplate’s off-road roots.
The new model is being developed on a new dedicated electric vehicle (EV) platform from JLR and has already been spotted testing on UK roads. It will be positioned below the current Defender 90, making it the most compact member of the expanding Defender family.
Speaking to Autocar, Defender brand director Mark Cameron said development of the new model was “well advanced”, although he declined to confirm exact launch timing or whether it will officially adopt the Sport name, which would be consistent with the names of the Range Rover Sport and the Discovery Sport.
According to a previous Autocar report, the Defender Sport name was inadvertently added to Land Rover’s public website but visible only via search engines.

However, there’s also a chance JLR could use a numerical name for its smaller Defender, which could potentially be designated as the ‘Defender 80’ to position it below the existing Defender 90, 110 and 130 model derivatives.
Whatever it is called, the baby Defender will be underpinned by the same Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform as electric versions of the next-generationRange Rover Velardue in 2026, and theRange Rover Evoque.
Widely expected to be launched globally in 2027, the smaller Defender is expected to measure about 4.5 metres long overall – making it shorter than the 4.6m-long short-wheelbase Defender 90 two-door – and around 1.8 metres tall.
The key difference will be its more luxurious positioning compared to the Discovery Sport, following the upmarket identity shift for the current-generation Defender when it arrived to critical acclaim in 2020.
The smaller entry-level Land Rover will partially fulfill the role of both the existing Discovery Sport first launched in 2014, and its predecessors in the original 1997 Freelander and the Freelander 2, which was produced until 2015.
The baby Defender will be built in Merseyside in the UK, which is being upgraded for EV production, while an electric version of the bigger ‘regular’ Defender will be based on JLR’s Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform, and Jaguar will move to its own bespoke JEA electric architecture.
It will be the first entirely new product since Defender was spun off from Land Rover into its own standalone brand – alongside Range Rover and Discovery – under JLR’s ‘House of Brands’ strategy. It also marks the first step in what’s expected to be a broader expansion of the Defender portfolio.
However, at just over 4.5m long, the smaller Defender will inevitably face packaging compromises due to its underfloor battery layout, and Mr Cameron admitted that using a dedicated EV platform creates “vehicle constraints”.
“The size of the vehicle and platform will probably reduce wheel travel and articulation compared with a current Defender,” he said.
That means the Defender Sport won’t match the outright off-road ability of today’s ladder-frame Defender range, but Mr Cameron insisted it will still set the benchmark in its segment.
“What matters to us is that a Defender has to be class-leading in the attributes that make it a Defender,” he said, confirming the retention of four-wheel drive and therefore almost certainly a dual-motor electric setup.
Mr Cameron acknowledged that Defender’s signature boxy design presents additional challenges in the EV era, where aerodynamic efficiency is critical to maximising driving range.
“The capability we have in our vehicles carries a penalty that works against you when you think about range for an EV, given the silhouette of what most people would know a Defender to be: very upright, sharp window angles, a bluff rear end,” he said.
“My job is to make sure we retain Defender’s DNA, otherwise we become another SUV brand and there are plenty of those.”
Despite increasing pressure from fast-moving Chinese brands, Mr Cameron said JLR is refusing to compromise on development standards.
“What has disrupted our industry hugely are shrunken test cycles due to some of the Chinese brands,” he said. “Their speed to market is just incredible.
“But we have always maintained that we need to have at least two winter test cycles and two hot weather test cycles for a Defender. We’re looking at ways to shrink our product development time, but we don’t want to compromise on quality and longevity and all the things you have to deliver as a luxury brand.”
Mr Cameron also revealed JLR is carefully considering which EV components it develops in-house and which it sources externally.
“As a business we’re looking at where do we partner, and where do we build in-house. You’ve got to work out your core competencies,” he said.
“If you look at the EV world, the actual battery pack and the electric drive units have, to some extent, become commodities. But do they give us the torque characteristics and off-road drivability that Defender has to have?
“Those are big decisions: the quickest way to market is to buy all that in, but that’s not necessarily the right answer for Defender.”
Mr Cameron declined to detail specific future products beyond the first Defender EV. Earlier spy shots of the baby Defender showed a clear lack of exhaust outlets, which are visible in later images; increasing demand for hybrid vehicles may see a plug-in version introduced.
The Defender brand director suggested the potential size of the Defender lineup is “huge”, and this expansion is likely to include multiple powertrain options, reflecting what he described as “the complexity of EV adoption”, with customer demand in many markets trailing legislative targets.
Defender’s global sales mix presents additional challenges. Diesel remains dominant in the UK, while the US – now Defender’s largest market – has cooled on electrification.
“Our strategy is to offer as much choice for as long as we can,” Mr Cameron said.
“Clearly with the Defender, because of the capabilities, toughness, the weight and the geometry of it, as long as we can keep selling petrol and diesel with hybridisation and other forms of interim technology, we’ll continue to do so.”
The current Defender is available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but it pairs a four-cylinder engine with a relatively modest electric-only range due to the limitations of the existing D7 platform.
Mr Cameron indicated that future architectures will allow more advanced electrified solutions.
“We’re going to be relying on future generations and different architectures to expand those sorts of technologies,” he said.
Defender’s increasingly global focus could also influence its body style mix.
“Beyond the UK there are vehicle types that are absolutely suitable [for Defender] in certain geographies,” Mr Cameron said.
“The US is now our biggest market, and there are product categories popular there we can absolutely bring Defender into.”
That comment is likely to fuel speculation about a long-mooted Defender pickup for markets like North America and perhaps Australia, although Mr Cameron declined to elaborate.
At the other end of the spectrum, he acknowledged demand in Europe for more compact vehicles.
“In Europe they need small cars for tight streets,” he said. “The red line we’ve got to draw is that any future versions of Defender still have to have the same characteristics that every Defender needs. There’s no reason you can’t go smaller, bigger, longer, higher and still cover those bases.”
However, he stressed expansion won’t come at the expense of brand clarity.
“The biggest challenge is that we don’t want to be all things to all people, so we’ve got to work out where to [focus] – and it’s not about volume for us. It’s about building a good, profitable, margin-led business and satisfying customer needs in segments and markets that don’t exist today.
“If you look at JLR as a business, we’ve always been at our best when we create segments. Range Rover is a great example. The Evoque was a great example. Defender today is a good example: it reimagined the rugged SUV segment.
“So we’re going to look carefully at those white spaces in the market where we can credibly have a Defender product. But we won’t copy something just to chase volume, because that’s not what our business plan is.”
Mr Cameron told Autocar that in the three years since JLR’s ‘House of Brands’ plan was announced, the focus has been on both new product development and defining what Defender stands for as a distinct brand.
“Over the past couple of years, our design and engineering teams have created that red line, the circle that every Defender had to have. That’s the DNA,” he said.
The Defender lineup currently comprises the 90, 110 and 130 body styles, as well as the high-performance Octa flagship and the commercial-focused Hardtop.
Mr Cameron said the long-term ambition is to position Defender as “a luxury lifestyle brand”.
“We’ve got a portfolio of one model with several variants, but I’m working seven to 10 years ahead to build out this whole brand portfolio,” he said.
“We’ve got to make sure everything we do as Defender has the DNA of the brand: epic built-to-last, go-anywhere capability.”
