Australia's best-selling EVs in 2025 revealed

Tesla remained Australia’s top-selling electric vehicle (EV) brand in 2025, but based on BYD’s trajectory the Chinese brand could overtake it locally in 2026.

Per data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council, new EV deliveries totalled 103,269 units last year, up 13.1 per cent on 2024. EVs therefore accounted for 8.3 per cent of all new vehicle deliveries in 2025.

In 2024, they accounted for 7.4 per cent of the overall market, or 91,495 deliveries overall.

These figures include a small handful of electric heavy commercial vehicles.

Below is a breakdown of Australia’s best-selling EVs by brand and by individual model.

Brands

Tesla remained on top in 2025, despite a 24.8 per cent decline in sales and despite BYD overtaking it in global EV sales.

The American brand will need to keep a close eye on its Chinese rival this year, as just 3569 units separated the two brands in 2025 and BYD has only just started rolling out cut-price EVs like the Atto 1 and Atto 2.

In 2025, Tesla models accounted for 30 per cent of all EV deliveries in Australia, while BYD was just behind at 24.5 per cent. That’s a steep drop for Tesla, which held 42 per cent of the EV market in 2024, and its 53 per cent share in 2023.

A surging Kia pushed past MG and BMW to become Australia’s third best-selling EV brand.

New brands like Geely entered the market in 2025, while others like Deepal commenced reporting their sales figures after a brief delay.

However, some other new brands like Cadillac and GAC have yet to commence reporting sales figures to the FCAI or EVC.

No surprise, here – the Tesla Model Y remained Australia’s best-selling EV.

Slumping sales for its Model 3 sibling relegated the electric sedan to third place, with the BYD Sealion 7 – launched early in 2025 – outselling it by more than two to one.

The Kia EV5 finished in fourth, while the Geely EX5 finished in fifth. These are still quite new nameplates, with the EV5 launching here in 2024 and the EX5 following in 2025.

The MG 4, which had been Australia’s third best-selling EV in 2024, fell to ninth place due to a significant decline in sales. The BYD Seal also slumped from fourth to seventh spot.
