All Chery Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 crossover SUVs now have a five-star rating from independent safety authority ANCAP.
The top rating had previously been applied to petrol-powered versions of the two SUVs, but ANCAP has now applied it to all petrol and plug-in hybrid Tiggo 7 variants produced from June 30, 2025.
The safety authority also says it was provided with technical information that shows the results for the Tiggo 7 are applicable to related petrol and plug-in hybrid Tiggo 8 SUVs produced from March 2025 onwards.
This testing is all based on 2023-25 ANCAP testing criteria, with the ratings to expire in December 2031.

The removal of the driver’s knee airbag from petrol-powered Tiggo 7s last year wasn’t enough to rob it of its five-star rating; the feature is standard on the Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid and all Tiggo 8s.
Performance of the emergency lane-keep assist was knocked down from Good to Adequate in this latest testing, while the driver monitoring system received a lower score. The child presence detection system was assessed this time, but it didn’t meet ANCAP’s requirements and therefore zero points out of four (instead of a single point) were rewarded.
Chery’s entire lineup now has a five-star safety rating, apart from the Tiggo 9 introduced late last year which has yet to be assessed; the Tiggo 4’s five-star rating also only applies to petrol variants at present, and like the Tiggo 8 is based on testing of the Tiggo 7.
Chery’s small C5 and electric E5 crossovers both wear a five-star rating, while sister brand Omoda Jaecoo has five-star ratings for its Omoda 9 and Jaecoo J7 crossover SUVs, with the Jaecoo J8 – a cousin to the Chery Tiggo 9 – yet to be assessed.
All Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 models have received an adult occupant protection rating of 82 per cent, a child occupant protection rating of 86 per cent, a vulnerable road user protection rating of 80 per cent and a safety assist rating of 82 per cent.
That’s down slightly from scores of 88 per cent, 87 per cent, 79-80 per cent (depending on the model) and 86 per cent in testing of the pre-update Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 under the same 2023-25 testing protocols.
“With these ratings, Chery has demonstrated high levels of vehicle safety performance, regardless of powertrain,” said ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg in a statement.
Chery launched plug-in hybrid ‘Super Hybrid’ versions of its Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 last year, with the entry-level version of the former currently Australia’s most affordable plug-in hybrid.
The Chinese brand classifies its Tiggo 7 as a medium SUV and its Tiggo 8 as a large SUV, but they effectively sit at opposite ends of the medium SUV spectrum.
The Tiggo 7 is 4540mm long and 1870mm wide, while the Tiggo 8 is 4724mm long and 1865mm wide – or almost identical in size to the mid-size Mitsubishi Outlander.
The two mid-size SUVs share a platform, and their mechanical similarities have evidently allowed ANCAP to forego separate crash-testing for each model.
Chery has come a long way from its first crack at the Australian market in the early 2010s, when its vehicles received two- and three-star safety ratings.
Not only has it massively improved its vehicles’ safety performance, but its second go at the Australian market has been vastly more successful overall.
It was Australia’s 13th best-selling brand last year and finished in the top 10 for several months, with sales up 176.8 per cent year-on-year.
