Lamborghini has scrapped plans to introduce its first electric vehicle (EV) in 2029, with boss Stefan Winkelmann telling CarExpert it will instead introduce a new, fourth model with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain in the same year.
The brand had previously planned for a new EV to be introduced in 2028 as a new nameplate alongside its best-selling Urus SUV, V12 Revuelto and V8 Temerario sports cars, which all use PHEV powertrains.
It showed the Lanzador two-plus-two concept with battery-electric propulsion in late 2023 ahead of planned production in 2028, following fellow Volkswagen Group brands Porsche and Audi down the electric path.
Yet in late 2024, Mr Winkelmann pushed those plans back to 2029, saying the market wouldn’t be ready for a Lamborghini EV in 2028 – and has now moved the arrival of a Lamborghini EV back indefinitely.

Speaking on a call with media including CarExpert, Mr Winkelmann said the decision to postpone its first EV was “due to the fact that we are ready to do so, but the market is not”.
“We see that there is … the flattening curve of the adoption of electric cars globally, and also across the segments, so this is even more valid for our type of cars,” he said.
It comes after massive financial losses from Porsche on EVs, and strategy revisions from Volkswagen and Audi – which says it’s full steam ahead on its next EV sports car – but with Lamborghini needing to assess its moves independently.
“We are not selling mobility – you don’t buy a Lamborghini because you have to go from A to B every day. We’re selling dream cars, which maybe is something you wanted since you were a child – a dream of many and the reality of a few,” he said.
“Therefore, we decided our fourth model, which is going to be a Gran Turismo (GT), is going to be a plug-in hybrid – so we will not have an electric vehicle in the foreseeable future.”
The new PHEV is expected to be based on the Lanzador concept, a name Mr Winkelmann said is not locked in but which he hopes is kept for the showroom model as it follows the brand’s tradition of naming models after bullfighters.
He also underlined that the decision to postpone EVs for the company was not taken lightly.
“This decision is the decision we have taken by looking very carefully [at] what is happening around the globe, geopolitical situations, political decisions.”
“We have to be aware of the fact that we have to deliver what our customers desire – we don’t see in the short and medium term any change to this way of thinking, so this is the decision we took – and this is what we are going to do with the fourth model.
“We will have four cars, all with plug-in hybrid powertrains, by the end of this decade.”
Earlier this year, Lamborghini’s chief technical officer, Rouven Mohr, told CarExpert the Italian automaker will continue to develop internal combustion engine (ICE) technology to deliver an emotive driving experience for as long as customer demand and emissions legislation allows.
“If you speak about the future of combustion for sure, for us, we are aiming to continue as long as possible,” Mr Mohr said.
“This is clear not because – you know, sometimes some colleagues say, ‘ah, it’s not so much about the old world’ – [but because] we still think that we have a lot of ideas to transport, let me say, the combustion future.”
Lamborghini posted record global sales in 2025, its fifth year in a row of sales growth, with 10,747 deliveries, including 272 sales in Australia – a single unit less than the previous year – led by the Urus SUV.
