2027 Volvo EX60 revealed: Electric XC60 counterpart locked in for Australia

The Volvo EX60 has been revealed as a new mid-size electric SUV that serves as the battery-powered counterpart to the popular XC60.

It slots in between the EX30 and EX40 small electric SUVs and the flagship EX90, and debuts the Sino-Scandinavian automaker’s new SPA3 dedicated electric vehicle (EV) platform.

The EX60 is expected to arrive in Australia either late 2026 or early 2027, depending on the variant. A Performance variant is expected on sale here in mid-2027.

Unlike some other Volvos sold here, the EX60 will come from the brand’s homeland of Sweden rather than China.

Volvo has yet to confirm pricing, and warns that initial volume from the factory will be “somewhat limited”.

There will be a choice of three batteries and three powertrains, including both single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations, which wear P6, P10 AWD and P12 AWD nameplates.

All EX60s feature 22kW bidirectional charging capability, depending on the country.

Each powertrain will be available in either Plus or Ultra trims, with an entry-level Core grade to be introduced later.

Volvo will also offer the EX60 in more rugged-looking Cross Country guise, which has a wider track, sits 20mm higher and features air suspension that can raise the vehicle by another 20mm; at higher speeds, the vehicle can lower itself to reduce drag.

The EX60 Cross Country also features unique wheel-arch cladding and upper door mouldings, plus an exclusive Frost Green exterior paint finish, stainless steel skid plates, and Cross Country lettering embossed in the front and rear bumpers.

Under the skin, the EX60 uses double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension. Frequency-selective dampers, hydraulic shock absorbers, stabiliser bars, and coil springs feature both front and rear.

Here’s a breakdown of the powertrains and batteries:

Volvo claims the EX60’s carbon footprint matches that of the small EX30 electric SUV, while the EX60 P12 AWD is its longest-range EV yet.

Here’s how the EX60 measures up against the existing XC60.

EX60 XC60
Length 4803mm 4708mm
Width 1908mm 1902mm
Height 1635mm 1655mm
Wheelbase 2970mm 2865mm
Ground clearance 182mm 205mm

Volvo claims there’s 523 litres of boot space including under-floor storage, rising to 998L with the second row folded; these figures increase to 634L and 1647L respectively, when cargo volume is measured to the roof.

There’s also an under-bonnet storage space, with 58-85L of volume.

The EX60 is recognisably part of the Volvo EV lineup, thanks to touches like the Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, the split-level vertical tail-lights, and the prominent (and angular) shoulders.

Inside, there’s a minimalist interior, with little in the way of conventional switches. There’s a large landscape-oriented infotainment touchscreen and a slim, high-mounted digital instrument cluster.

Storage can be found within in the centre stack, while there’s a two-level centre console, an expansive fixed-glass roof, and an available Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

The EX60 is the first Volvo to be built using mega casting, in which hundreds of smaller parts are replaced with larger recycled aluminium casts, to improve production efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing.

Volvo says the SPA3 platform is ready for continuous hardware and software improvement. The EX60 uses Volvo’s Superset tech stack, a single set of hardware and software modules that’ll be used in all future electric Volvos.

It uses a Qualcomm 8255 CPU for ultra-fast processing, which Volvo says has enabled it to offer Google Gemini built-in with “lag-free, conversational AI” support.

With the EX60, Volvo’s EV lineup has grown to seven models: the EX30, EX40 and EX90 SUVs offered here, plus the EC40 recently axed from the local lineup, the large ES90 liftback recently added, and the EM90 people mover exclusive to China.

It’s sized similarly to not only the mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid XC60 range, but also the XC70 plug-in hybrid crossover revealed last year for China.
