The GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV has been named Australia’s best electrified ute in the 2026 CarExpert Choice Awards, marking the second consecutive year it’s taken the award.
It beat out two finalists: another plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute in the BYD Shark 6, and the KGM Musso EV which is a pure-electric dual-cab.
While the BYD Shark 6 can now be had with a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain and a 3500kg braked towing capacity like the GWM, our voting was conducted prior to the launch of the new Performance flagship.
Looking for your next car? We’ll help you research and compare so you choose with confidence.
Nevertheless, the GWM still stands out with its mechanical four-wheel drive system featuring up to three differential locks, making it the preferred choice if you plan on serious off-roading.
While it’s capable off the beaten track, back in the urban grind it impresses with its plush, SUV-like ride, which goes hand in hand with its plush, SUV-like interior. One look inside the Cannon Alpha PHEV will have many asking: “This is a ute?!”
Performance is strong, with total system outputs of 300kW of power and 750Nm of torque, while the big 37.1kWh battery gives it 115km of electric range – though it does mean the spare wheel has been mounted in the tub.
Pricing is more than competitive too, with the Cannon Alpha PHEV opening at $57,490 drive-away. That said, GWM regularly offers deals, so you could drive away in one for less.
The Cannon Alpha PHEV offers the best combination of value for money, off-road ability and on-road comfort among the electrified utes on sale today, which is why it’s our pick.
